STEP 1: Enrol on NVQL2 Introduction to Counselling Skills online or classroom course, or equivanent OFQUAL certified training (approximately 3 to 6 months)
STEP 2: Enrol on NVQL3 Counselling Skills and Theory online or classroom course, or equivanent OFQUAL certified training (approximately 9 to 12 months)
STEP 3: Enrol on a L4 Diploma in Counselling (or higher level), Therapeutic Counselling or Counselling and Psychotherpy Diploma, BSc, Postgradate Training or just jump to MA in Counselling, if you already have a degree in another subject, by learning online or in a classroom. OFQUAL certified training essential (note: online courses at this level might limit your registration with some ethical bodies but check with the training provider before enrolling. Decide whether this matters for you and where you intend to practice. In the UK some ethical bodies want you to do classroom tuition at this level to become a member, but the trend is going online). Further, some universities offer graduate online diplomas.
STEP 4: From L4+ you can register as a student counsellor with an ethical body and get independent insurance (insurance cover for risks of causing harm to clients at least 1,000,000 or more). At this stage, you will be expected to complete at least (a) 100 hours or less training hours at a placement doing trainee counselling in action, normally in a voluntary capacity and (b) separate to that you must attend clinical supervision in-house or with an independent clinical supervisor at some placements for at least 1.5 hours a month (fees might apply). Your training company will let you know exactly how many hours of personal therapy you might need to do and the provision of supervision, whether it will be provided inhouse or will need to be external to the placement to be logged and apply to future registrations where you will need to provide proof of your portfolio .
STEP 5: All your hours needs to be supervised and signed off by your clinical supervisor and you will normally need a supervisor's report as your course is drawing to an end, so keep good records as you go along because it will be a lot to record if you leave it to the end. This is a normal requirement to complete the training course needs and to demonstrate your learning and competence levels.
STEP 6: If you want to be registered as a qualified counsellor or psychotherapist you can contact one or more ethical bodies once you have completed your L4 or equivalent training course, or higher training. This can upgrade your membership from trainee counsellor to registered counsellor or higher registrations as your competence grows.
STEP 7: When you passed your course, you will need to complete 450 client hours; 1-1; a combination of face to face, telephone, webchat trainee counselling sessions, then you can apply for higher registration memberships or accreditation if you want to. You will need to have a case study handy, but you will need that proof of 450 hours signed off by supervisors so keep good clear records. Some of your hours at this stage can include working in different settings but speak to a professional clinical supervisor before you start, your course provider and placement manager.
STEP 8: Once you get to this stage you should be familiar with your own evolving personal therapy, clinical supervision, voluntary placements, employed opportunities, self employment options, continuing personal and professional development (CPD), working as an employee assistance programme as a counsellor - EAP (in house or self employed), or open to new ideas like private practice.
